>Opening is tonight

IMGP2821

With the opening tonight I thought I would show you a few pictures from some of the rehearsals.  People are not in full costume in these photos.  With about 50 players in the play and they average out to ruffly having 10 items a piece (some more some less) this was quite the undertaking for a 13 day project to costume. If you want to see the rest of my photos of the costumes go to the flickr album for fiddler on the roof.

I am busy working on this production be back as soon as possible I hope to show photos from the play so you can see what I have been up to.  Over 50 different players in the play and I have made bits and pieces of every persons costumes.  Just a bit busy!

>Oberon (my favorite pieces)

>It didn’t come out well in the photos and I didn’t have my camera when he tried these on.  So I will try to get more photos later and make another post of this one.  I had so much fun making the crown for Oberon King of the Faeries.  I had to make it masculine but yet faerie-ish as the teen in question would have none of that glittery flowery stuff.  So this is what I came up with.  I figured the girls are all flowers and bugs (butterflies and bees).  So I would make him the other parts of nature the greens, seeds and twigs, the birds and the animals (you won’t see his collar in theses photo but he is wearing an turquoise cape ( same color in the peacock feathers) that has a faux white fur collar.  The cape will have an opening in the back to let the wings through and hid the harness.  He is wearing a shirt the same color as the harness so it shouldn’t show to much even in the front.

I made the wings first.  They are light in weight you really can’t feel them on you weight wise.  Everything is hand stitched on except the feathers and the nut in the middle of the feathers.  I wish I had hand stitched the feathers as well because when I glued them one shifted while drying and is a little off.

Last I made the crown.  I wanted to make it match the wings but still be very masculine, hard to show masculine on a female display head but I don’t have a male one.  I like the way it came out everything is hand stitched on except the 3 nuts in the center front.  I used mono-filament to do the stitching to make it hard to see.  I first made a green felt frame that is two thicknesses of felt this way it wouldn’t itch the wearer.  Then I sewed on a buckle just like the one on the harness so it could be adjustable.  Then the center front details got attached followed by the sticks on the sides and back lastly the nuts glued to the front to hide the joins of all the feathers and finish it off nicely.

This is the last character I worked on from the play and the last one I am showing.  I may post some more photos of all the the actors in full costume.

>Pink Fairy

>

This is the last girl fairy in the group for the play.  She  is an extra character to add more variety to the stage and more color.  Meaning she isn’t in the original play but that doesn’t mean she isn’t important to the play.  this one also has butterflies in her hair piece.

Hip piece for those who are curious the flowers on the streamers are just dismantled silk flowers with the ribbon going through the hole in the middle of the petals then just a simple knot to hold it in place would be pretty on an Easter dress too.

>Mischievous Puck

>I made a sleeve for puck to wear on which ever arm he chooses.  We had some costuming issues with him.  Had to change his outfit at the last second as nothing would fit him.  This was originally planned to go with a different outfit but Puck was to slender to wear the other one.  So now it goes with this one.  I used grommets also it could be taken on and off easily and  it is lined with felt to make it comfortable to wear and not be itchy.    I did some hand embroidery, blanket stitching around the felt leaves at the top to hold the two layers together and to add a little more detail with shades of green to that area.  Also if the wrist band got twisted on the arm the arm could still bend at the elbow and not be uncomfortable.

I had originally planned more feathers but decided they would get damaged so close to the body on a moving part like an arm.  So I saved them for Oberon King of the Faries’s crown (which was the hardest thing for me to make).  Yes I am saving that for last as with his wings the second hardest thing I made for this play.

>Titania Queen of the Faries

>

I didn’t have much to do with this costume all I had to do was add feathers to the crown.  But it did add a little something to the overall look.  Up-close you can see the band that holds the feathers but from a distance like the audience not noticeable so it should be fine.  I used mono-filament threads so you can’t see how it is stitched to the crown.  My oldest daughter is wearing it in the top two photos.

Here is Titania She had her wings already so this is her whole costume minus shoes, hair and makeup.

>Peasblossom

>Here is Peasblossom in Greens and whites.  I was running out of greens and whites at this point in the game I would have liked it to have more flowers.

This is Peasblossom ( once again this was fitting day so they are not in complete costume.  So please ignore the lack of wings and the addition of shoes and socks.

>Mustard Seed

>Here is Mustard Seed another fairy form A Mid-summer Nights Dream.  This one has a little bee hiding in her bonnet and a few butterflies too.  I didn’t get a decent picture of Mustard Seed so I will have to post one at a later date.

This looks weird from this angle but it actually doesn’t look flat in the middle in real life the butterfly was turned weird in this picture so I fixed that since.
